I would like to whiten my teeth and would like to know if the whitening centers at the mall are safe.

Answer:

As with any process, I always recommend those which will be safest for the lifetime of your teeth.  Although you will see fast and dramatic results from a tooth-whitening store, the process can be very dehydrating for your teeth, making them more vulnerable to damage and sensitivity.  The safest and most reliable way to lighten your teeth is through custom bleach trays created by your dentist.  He or she can work with you to develop a plan that will comfortably whiten your smile to a natural shade.

What is the difference between traditional metal fillings and the tooth-colored fillings?

Answer:

Silver-colored fillings are called amalgam, and are an alloy of metals, including mercury.  Composite filling are made of a compound designed to match your teeth.  Not only are they more attractive, but they are far safer.  In fact, many European countries no longer allow the use of amalgam.  Although composite is slightly more expensive, I typically only use composite, and strongly recommend the composite for children, who are more vulnerable to mercury toxicity.  In addition, environmental concerns dictate eliminating the use of mercury.
